Coconut Chutney / Thengai Chutney (For Idli / Dosai / Pongal)

Coconut Chutney is one of the most basic and frequently prepared side dishes in our home. It goes with almost every South Indian tiffin favorite—dosa, idli, pongal, upma, uthappam, and many more.

Fresh coconut gives the best flavor, but frozen coconut also works well. When using frozen coconut, I like adding a little warm water while grinding, which helps give the chutney a smoother texture closer to one made with fresh coconut.

Ingredients

For the Chutney

  • Grated coconut – 4 tbsp
  • Roasted chana dal / Pottukadalai – 3 tbsp
  • Green chilies – 3
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  • Salt – to taste
  • Water – 1/4 cup, plus more as needed

For Tempering

  • Oil – 1 tsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Split urad dal – 1 tsp
  • Chana dal – 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig

Optional Additions

  • Ginger – 1-inch piece
  • Garlic – 1–2 cloves
  • Coriander leaves – 2 tbsp

Preparation

  1. Add the grated coconut, roasted chana dal, green chilies, 1 sprig curry leaves, and salt to a mixer grinder.
  2. If using any of the optional ginger, garlic, or coriander leaves, add them at this stage.
  3. Add the water gradually and grind to a smooth, thick chutney.
  4. Transfer the ground chutney to a serving bowl.
  5. Add a little more water if needed to reach your preferred consistency.

Tempering

  1. Heat the oil in a small pan over medium heat.
  2. Add the mustard seeds and allow them to splutter.
  3. Add the split urad dal and chana dal.
  4. Fry briefly until the dals begin to turn lightly golden.
  5. Add the remaining curry leaves and fry for a few seconds.
  6. Pour the tempering over the ground coconut chutney.
  7. Mix gently and adjust the consistency with a little water if needed.
  8. Taste and adjust the salt before serving.

Tips

Fresh Coconut: Freshly grated coconut gives the chutney its freshest flavor and naturally creamy texture.

Frozen Coconut: If using frozen coconut, thaw it and grind with a little warm water. This helps soften the coconut and improves the texture.

Ginger, Garlic or Coriander: Add ginger, garlic, or coriander leaves for different flavor variations. You can use one or combine them according to your preference.

More Curry Leaves: Adding a few extra curry leaves can give the chutney a stronger aroma.

Dried Red Chili Variation: Dried red chilies can be used instead of green chilies for a different flavor and color. Adjust the quantity according to your preferred spice level.

Consistency: Keep the chutney thick for dosa and pongal, or add a little more water for a looser chutney to serve with idli.

Storage: Coconut chutney is best served fresh. If storing leftovers, refrigerate promptly in a covered container and use soon.

Serving Suggestion

Serve Coconut Chutney with idli, dosa, rava dosa, uthappam, ven pongal, upma, paniyaram, or other South Indian tiffin dishes.

Swathi, you can add depending upon your taste. Usually I add 1 or 2 small pods.

Adding hot water on to the frozen coconut is a great idea and the chutney turned out to be as close to the one made of fresh coconut. Thank you
