Sharing a very simple recipe prepared in Kongunadu area for idili/ dosas. Anyone from that area would definitely have tasted this.
I get reminded of my home very much when ever I prepare this. I love this as a side for plain dosa.
I sometimes grind tomatoes instead of chopping and frying. So try it both ways and see which you like best. Adding cloves and cinnamon is optional.

Oil | 3 tbsp |
Mustard | 1/4 tsp |
Cinnamon Sticks | 1 inch |
Cloves | 2 nos |
Green Chili | 3-4 nos |
Curry Leaves | 1 strand |
Red Onion | 1/2 no (medium) |
Turmeric | 1/2 tsp |
Tomatoes | 2 nos (medium) |
Salt | to taste |
Coriander Leaves | 3 tbsp |
To Grind: | |
Coconut | 5 tbsp |
Roased Chickpea | 2 tbsp |
Fennel Seeds | 1 tsp |
Poppy Seeds | 3/4 tsp |
Curry Leaves | 5-6 leaves |
Green Chili | 2 nos |

Step 1
Grind the items given in the “To Grind” section to a smooth paste. Chop onion, split open green chili. Chop coriander leaves.

Step 2
In a pan heat oil, add mustard when mustard splutters add the cinnamon, cloves, curry leaves and green chili. Add the onion and fry till translucent.

Step 3
Add the tomatoes, turmeric and cook until it’s soft. Add the ground paste and boil for 10 min in medium flame. Add the salt, coriander leaves at the end.
(*) Enjoy with plain dosa/ idili.

Made this recipe today. It came out fantastic! My Mom is from Erode and my Dad is from Sathyamangalam and I grew up on Kongu Nadu cuisine. Very good recipe , turned out very well when i made it coz no time to boil dal . It was better than sambhar with idli i should say
i do have a request , try to give us more veg recipes from kongu. Sooo looking forward to them

I like your recipes, thanks a lot. It helps me to cook nicely for my family. Can we try without poppy seed, that would make any major taste difference?
The taste varies if u add or dont any ingredients. But I sometimes try without poppy seed.. it tastes good too.

Its just kulambu and not sambar as it doesnt have any boiled dal in it.. However i like this recipe.. Thanks for sharing.
No Dhal is required for this Sambar?
