Pongal with Rock Sugar or Sugar Candy / Kalkandu Pongal

Cook Time :25 Min | Servings : 2 persons

Happy Tamil New year Friends !!
I was thinking to do something sweet on the Tamil New year day but wasn’t sure what to do. Suddenly got reminded of the rock sugar which I recently brought from Indian groceries and got this recipe from my MIL. She was telling me that this would taste like halwa as we add more milk and ghee. Trust me, they tasted really like halwa !!! I added more milk than water, also the ghee improved it’s taste.

I don’t remember a special occasion on when this is prepared at our houses, but these days Kalkandu pongal is served in marriages at my palce for dinner.

Hotel Sambar / Tiffin Sambar

Any one would be delighted to hear the recipe cooked with restaurant style at home. I am sure of that kind. This is a tamilnadu style Hotel Sambar more like Saravana Bhavan Sambar. I love this with idili, dosa, pongal and other tiffin items. The ground Masala added at the end gives the extra taste.

Aval Dosai / Poha Dosa / Flattened Rice Dosa

Are you wondering what to do with remaining raw aval or left over raw aval ? I was searching for and found this recipe. Aval dosa is very soft and tastes good. Also, I read an interview with Cooking expert, Mrs. Mallika Badrinath and she says poha adds softness to normal dosa batter. So will definitely try next time.

Rice Kheer / Rice Pudding Kheer / Rice Payasam

Rice Kheer is a very famous Indian dessert which would be served in Parties and restaurants. It taste delicious, not very strong sweetness attracts even non-sweet lovers. It’s very easy to make in home and the recipes follows as boiling the milk, allow it to thicken and add rice, nuts. Even cooked rice or left over rice can also be used in the recipe.
This can be served either chilled or hot. I like it to be served chill.

Tamilnadu Ven Pongal

Venn Pongal is a eaten as a breakfast item in Tamilnadu. The rice &  moon dhal cooked in ghee tastes awesome with coconut chutney. This is very easy to prepare, trust me no one dislikes this pongal. The best combo for this is Medhu Vadai with Coconut Chutney.

Buttermilk Gravy / Mor Kulambu

A simple flavorful Kulambu to be accompanied with white rice. Potato roast or vadam is the best combo according to me.

Tried making chetinnadu method vendaikkai moor kulambu and it turned out very good. I think this is derived from Revathi Shanmugam recipes, don’t remember exactly. My mom makes it without coriander leaves and green chili but it does add unique flavor and I enjoy it with this.
